Masai Mara National Reserve
Masai Mara, a vast area of undulating plains intersected by the Mara River and it's tributaries – (part of the greater Serengeti ecosystem that stretches across the border into Tanzania), is undoubtedly the jewel of Kenya's Wildlife viewing areas and offers some of the most exciting game viewing on the continent. In July or August, Maras' rolling plains are crowded with millions of plains game animals on their ‘annual pilgrimage' – Great Migration in search of fresh grazing fields
The sight of this mass exodus is awe inspiring. Masai Mara is home to huge populations of animals all on display in a scenic landscape of open grassland and riverine forest. Birds are also a big part of the Mara experience. Game viewing is excellent all year round, however it should be noted that during the rainy season, the grass is fairly tall in some areas, which may affect visibility and restrict game drives slightly.
Masai Mara is also home to the Maasai, a pastoralist, nomadic people, after whom the park is named. While on game drives, you will often notice young tribesmen herding their cattle amongst the plains game. They are colorfully attired, usually wrapped in bright red clothes, and are always armed with spears. You will marvel at their colorful costumes and famously agile dances, but it's their ancient cultures and way of life that will permanently imprint in your mind and heart for a very long time. Visiting a traditional Maasai village or enkang is frequently included in a safari package to the Masai Mara. While not really an authentic experience you may learn something about the Maasai. You can also take some excellent cultural tours to learn more about the Maasai.
Hot Air Ballooning is a popular pastime that provides a unique experience. The balloons usually fly at dawn and last about an hour. Upon landing a champagne breakfast awaits you in the middle of the savannah.
Mara attracts big game just as it attracts visitors; for both groups know that they will be safe and well looked after, free to roam unconfined and undisturbed.
